Introducing the ICC: A Global Force for Justice

What is the ICC?

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal based in The Hague, Netherlands. It was established in 2002 by the Rome Statute, which has been ratified by 108 countries.

Mission and Jurisdiction

The ICC's mission is to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and crimes of aggression. It has jurisdiction over crimes that were committed by nationals of member states or on the territory of member states.

The ICC also has jurisdiction over crimes committed during armed conflicts, regardless of whether the perpetrator or victim is a national of a member state. However, the ICC can only exercise jurisdiction if the national courts are unable or unwilling to investigate or prosecute the crime in question.
